Inhabit a Permaculture Perspective (movie)

Share Ever wonder how or if we can fix this planet from ourselves?  This movie is about what I’ve been studying for the past 4 years and I believe it is a way to solve many of our problems.  Please take a few minutes to watch this trailer. Yekra Player Yekra is a revolutionary new distribution network for feature films. Inhabit Humanity is more than ever threatened by its own actions; we hear a lot about the need to minimize footprints and to reduce our impact. But what if our footprints were beneficial? What if we could meet human needs while increasing the health and well-being of our planet? This is the premise behind permaculture: a design process based on […]

Share Hello all We at Riviv want to promote good healthy fresh farm food so we joined up with Farmigo to bring it to Jersey City. Our food system is in dire straits and we need to be the change that changes it. My best suggestions are listed as followed… 1. Grow your own food! 2. Buy directly from a friend or a local farmer. 3. Buy from a CSA, a farmers market. 4. 5. Supermarket I have become a Farmigo drop off location for my neighborhood and think this will help in making an impact in our food system. Please do your part and fixing our food. The food you put into your body is the key to […]

Teach the Kids to Grow

Share About a week ago, Riviv JC was asked to bring a little gardening to the students of school #20. I decided the best way to get kids interested in eating health and growing their own food is to just let them do it. I packed up some seeds and soil and headed to the Greenville section of JC to meet up with Miss Gordon and her students. With dirt in hand, people had no idea what this crazy bearded guy was doing signing in with security but I made it up to the classroom to find a room full of bright eyed first second and third graders. Most of them had never been exposed to real “dirt” before. Some […]

Say No To Grass

Share Ever wonder why people say “grow food not lawns”? The food not lawns mantra is changing the way people see lawns, and many people would agree having food will always be better than grass, but few realize what an astronomical drain of resources, time and energy growing grass is here in the US. Lawns cover over 40 million acres of our country. To help give that huge number a feel, consider 10 million acres are devoted to corn (our #1 crop). Consider also, watering lawns uses 19,551,060,000,000 gallons of fresh water a year (#1 use). Then, we dump 67,000,000 pounds of synthetic pesticides into our soil just trying to kill “weeds*”. That’s 10 times more than farmers use on […]

ShareSpring is just around the corner and it’s time to start your seeds.  This is a quick cheap easy way to build your own grow lights with supplies from a big box store.  All materials link to the product at big box depot.  I normally would use all recycled items but I know not everyone is running out to the dumpsters like I am so I got a bunch of crap from the store to show that anyone can do it. Repurposed T-shirt Dog Toy

ShareNow that I have a dog I realized that I need dog toys.  Being that I refuse to buy shit I had to figure out a way to make my own.  Up late last night I cut up some old dirty work tees and make a couple of pull toys for good old Eddie Murphy.  Hope you try one for yourself. Step 1 Cut the sleeves off at the seams running around the armpit then along the top shoulders and the sides going from the armpit down.   Step 2 Cut the front or back into 9 strips and stretch them out to make them long and thin.     Step 3 Take 3 strips and begin to braid them. […]

The Riviv Revolution

Share By 2016 (yes next year) the richest 1% will control more than half of the wealth that is on this planet.  I agree that hard work should be rewarded but at what cost?  Why do some people have the need to continue growing their wealth by taking from others?  How is this fair and how is it going to be fixed? To start off I’d like to give my view of how we got to this point. In the beginning people we were mostly self sufficient, If you needed something you produced it or bartered for it.  In time, people started using animals to assist them in producing what they needed and this made their lives more productive and easier. […]

Seed Saving Permaculture Style

ShareThank you all who came to last nights Meet-up.  Great sharing seeds with you all and exchanging thoughts.  Here is a recap for those who couldn’t attend. Saving seeds is ever more important now that companies like Monsanto are messing with nature in a way that is new to the planet. Companies are now Genetically Modifying the Organisms we EAT!  For those who are unclear as to what GMOs are, let me explain.  A GMO happens when you take a gene from one organism (a bacteria) and place it into another organism (plants we eat).  Now the scary part is why companies are doing this.  Traditionally we spray chemicals (Bt) onto a plants to kill the bugs who want to eat it.  The problem with that […]
